Raised in the rolling hills and farmlands of the Catskill Mountains in New York, Anne’s early love of the land is ever-present in her work today.
Her college career centered around teaching and music but her real passion was painting. In 1971 she began studying color mixing and oil painting and soon began selling her work. Her entrepreneurial efforts were realized when she began an art business in Glens Falls, NY in 1984, where she converted a factory building into a vibrant art center and retail space serving 350 students per week with a faculty of 30 teachers. An opportunity to move the family to Finland gave Anne time to explore watercolor and light with the unusually long days of the Midnight Sun. Here, she taught in the diplomatic community, the International School and exhibited at Finlandia Hall in Helsinki.
In 1996 she was invited to exhibit her pastel work in Nantucket at the Shanty Gallery on Old South Wharf. Her love of Nantucket, its inner landscape and artistic community brought Anne to the island year round where she teaches and paints.
Her highly successful business Sketching Tours of Nantucket received national attention from The Boston Globe and mark of approval from the Fodor’s Guide to Nantucket. Frommer’s Travel Magazine includes Anne’s learning tour in One Hundred Picks under $100 around the globe. Sketching Tours of Nantucket receives another accolade in Cape Cod Travel Guide Summer ‘06 as Anne celebrates her tenth year. Boston TV ‘s Channel 5 Chronicle featured Anne as artist and teacher in a recent show about LIfe on Nantucket. Anne’s teaching on the Island has touched more than 1000 students. Inspired to write a book for her students, Anne Baldwin Butler’s Nantucket Pencil developed into a custom House Portrait and note card business, Your Home...Your Note cards.
Her recent series of oil paintings show her evolving painterly style and layered complementary colors. Capturing the the lush growth of the moors , landmarks and fields of Nantucket’s inner landscape Anne’s reputation as an artist began to grow. Featured shows of Anne’s work at the Artist’s Association of Nantucket brought Anne the vehicle for an artistic voice on the island. In 2005 Anne joined the prestigious South Wharf Gallery under the direction of MaryBeth Splaine. Anne’s growth as an artist continues to thrive in the company of Sherre Wilson Rae and David Lazarus. Her recent structure paintings give bold composition to her large canvas.
Anne’s Sketching Tour of Paris receives rave reviews from her students. Using the streets of Paris, Monet’s Garden at Giverney, and the Hameau of Versailles, Anne gives her students the tools to capture its’ beauty. Her individual instruction and daily demonstrations provide the catalyst for the dream trip of a lifetime.
She is also on the faculty of the Artists’ Association of Nantucket with special visits to the Saratoga County Arts Council. Anne's favorite Saratoga scenes compile Anne’s latest book. Anne Baldwin Butler’s Saratoga Sketches found at Borders Books. She also introduced a Note Card line of her Saratoga Sketches. A permanent collection of sketches of Saratoga are found in the prestigious Franklin Square Lobby at Railroad Place in Saratoga.
