Charming gray whaling cottages decked with climbing roses, white picket fences , waving flags and window box treasures...... capture these memories in your own sketchbook through Anne's unique outdoor classroom. Since 1997 Anne has combined her love of the island and her experience as a teacher to offer an exciting Nantucket experience for anyone interested in art-from beginners to experts.
Sutherland begins the tour with guided drawing exercises in graphite which helps you capture everything from hydrangea to weathered shingles. Using the charming streets of Nantucket and her own sketching examples, Sutherland teaches the relevant elements of the renowned book Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain along with her own special sketching tips.
"I believe drawing is a developmental process, one which is easily taught to anyone who is open to learning. Once one becomes visually aware, one sees the world in a new way, and is never visually bored again."
"Sometimes a beginner says 'I can't draw a straight line.' I say 'good' because a line that looks alive on a paper is rarely a line which is perfectly straight."
"I teach students to use the eraser not for fixing something, but as a tool to embellish and soften the image."
After the instruction, you will explore the streets of Nantucket town in search of a scene to sketch. Anne will be with you for individual help and encouragement...as much or little as you like. The day's journey continues over the next couple of hours doing one or more sketches.
