Anne Baldwin Butler's lush palette, powerful brushstrokes, and undiscovered views of Nantucket generate a yin and yang quality in her canvases. Painting en plein air and in her studio, she uses forceful, yet soft brushwork that brings energy and beauty to her landscapes. Anne is a multi-talented artist; her talents as a teacher are practiced and admired on her Sketching Tours of Nantucket and her singing abilities are applauded in the numerous choral groups on the Island.
Of her art, she has this to say: “...Drawn to the views of the inner landscape and attending to a familiar framework, I begin. Eventually leaving the canvas subject behind.... I immerse myself in the unfamiliar - the innocent messages of color, marks, and abstract composition... recording on the canvas my own unearthing process. It is here I find the brushstrokes to be not what I see; instead what I feel.”
